The Ultimate Door County Road Trip: Small Towns, Scenic Stops & Must-See Places

There are road trips where the whole goal is to get from Point A to Point B as quickly as possible.

Door County Road Trip is absolutely not one of those road trips.

This little stretch of Wisconsin sticking out between Green Bay and Lake Michigan is made for wandering. You have waterfront towns, cherry orchards, lighthouses, state parks, little shops you didn’t plan on stopping at and enough scenic roads to make you forget you were supposed to be following an itinerary.

Basically, Door County is the kind of place where “We’ll just stop for five minutes” can easily turn into two hours.

And I’m completely okay with that.

The Ultimate Door County Road Trip : Small Towns, Shorelines & One Seriously Good Wisconsin Getaway

If you’re coming from Minnesota, Wisconsin or anywhere else in the Midwest, Door County makes a fantastic long-weekend road trip. If you have four or five days, even better.

Door County includes communities spread across both sides of the peninsula, with the Green Bay side generally offering busier waterfront towns and the Lake Michigan side giving you more rugged shoreline and nature stops. (Destination Door County)

If you’ve been wanting to explore more of the Midwest, add this one to the list along with my guide to 25 Hidden Midwest Towns You’ll Want to Visit.

So fill the gas tank, pack the snacks and give yourself permission to stop whenever something looks interesting.

Here’s how I’d do the ultimate Door County road trip.

Start Your Door County Road Trip in Sturgeon Bay

Sturgeon Bay is your unofficial gateway to Door County and a good place to start before heading farther north.

It has a little more going on than some of the tiny towns farther up the peninsula, but it still has that laid-back waterfront feel.

The town is heavily tied to Door County’s maritime history, with shipbuilding, waterfront parks, historic shopping areas and the Door County Maritime Museum among its attractions. (Destination Door County)

Walk around downtown, grab some coffee and check out the waterfront before you head north.

If you’re spending several days in Door County, Sturgeon Bay can also be a good place to stay because you’ll typically have plenty of lodging and dining options.

And speaking of saving a few bucks, my Best Budget Travel Tips are worth reading before you head out.

Make Your Way to Egg Harbor

Drive north and your next major stop is Egg Harbor.

Egg Harbor is one of the livelier communities on the peninsula, with shopping, restaurants, nightlife, waterfront views, beaches, a marina and nearby golf courses.

In other words, it’s a really easy place to accidentally spend half a day.

Park the car and wander around.

Grab lunch. Check out the shops. Walk along the waterfront.

And if you happen to find cherry pie or apple pie somewhere along the way, I’m certainly not going to tell you not to eat it. Or even grabbing bags of apples at stores along the way.

Actually, I encourage it.

You are in Door County.

Fish Creek and Peninsula State Park

Continue north to Fish Creek, one of Door County’s most popular communities.

Fish Creek has restaurants, shops, galleries, waterfront views and easy access to one of the biggest attractions in the entire county—Peninsula State Park.

This is one stop I wouldn’t rush.

Drive through the park, find a scenic overlook, hike if you’re in the mood or simply spend some time near the water.

Door County is one of those destinations where you don’t necessarily need a big scheduled activity every hour of the day.

Sometimes the activity is just:

Look at that view.

And then you stand there for 20 minutes.

Those are my kind of vacations.

Stop in Ephraim

Just north of Fish Creek is Ephraim, and this is one of those towns that practically begs you to slow down.

Ephraim sits along Eagle Harbor and is known for its historic waterfront setting, sunsets and the famous Anderson Dock.

This isn’t where I’d try to pack in a bunch of activities.

I’d grab something to drink, walk along the water and just enjoy being there.

If your Door County itinerary has become too scheduled by this point, Ephraim is where you fix that.

Sister Bay Is Made for Hanging Out

Then comes Sister Bay, another community where you could easily stay for the night.

Sister Bay has a large public waterfront and beach along with restaurants, nightlife and plenty going on from morning into the evening.

This is a good place to stop for dinner or cocktails after a day of driving.

And yes, this is also where you’ll find one of Door County’s most talked-about sights: goats hanging out on a restaurant roof.

Door County doesn’t feel the need to explain itself.

I respect that.

Take the Scenic Route to Gills Rock

Now we’re getting into one of my favorite parts of a road trip—the part where the road itself becomes the attraction.

Keep heading north toward Ellison Bay and Gills Rock.

Gills Rock sits near the very tip of the peninsula, and this is where you’ll find that famous winding stretch of Highway 42 you’ve probably seen photographed a thousand times.

And yes, you’re going to want the photo.

Destination Door County even includes getting the “winding road” photo among its must-do experiences in Gills Rock.

Drive it slowly, enjoy the scenery and please don’t stop in the middle of the road trying to create your Instagram masterpiece.

We all want the picture.

We also all want to live.

Cross Over to Washington Island

If you have an extra day, keep going to the Washington Island Ferry and take your road trip across the water.

Yes, your car can come too.

The ferry ride across Death’s Door takes about 30 minutes, and once you arrive you can drive around the island or explore by bike or other rentals.

Washington Island feels completely different from the busier Door County towns.

Things are quieter.

Roads feel more open.

And everything seems to slow down about three notches.

Make time for Schoolhouse Beach, which is known for its smooth limestone stones instead of sand. The island also has lavender, the Stavkirke church, hiking, local restaurants and plenty of quiet roads to explore.

If your schedule allows it, make Washington Island a full-day adventure instead of trying to cram it into a couple of hours.

Come Back Down the Lake Michigan Side

Here’s where I wouldn’t simply retrace the exact same route.

On your way south, cross over toward the Lake Michigan side of Door County and make stops around Baileys Harbor and Jacksonport.

This gives you a completely different feel from the Green Bay side.

Baileys Harbor

Baileys Harbor has thousands of acres of protected land along with hiking, biking, paddling, restaurants, a brewery and three historic lighthouses.

It’s a good stop if you love nature but still want someplace nearby to grab food or a drink afterward.

Because I fully support outdoor activities that end with food.

Don’t Miss Cave Point County Park

Before returning toward Sturgeon Bay, make time for Cave Point County Park near Jacksonport.

This is one of Door County’s most recognizable natural areas, with limestone shoreline cliffs and beautiful Lake Michigan views. Jacksonport also puts you near Whitefish Dunes State Park.

This is another one of those places where you’re going to take far too many pictures.

Keep them.

Delete them later.

Or don’t.

I currently have approximately nine million travel photos on my phone, so I’m probably not the person to give advice about that anyway. I try to upload most to my social account, but life, you know 😉

How Many Days Do You Need for a Door County Road Trip?

You can technically see a lot of Door County in a weekend, but I’d give yourself three to four days if you can.

A perfect itinerary would look something like:

Day 1: Sturgeon Bay → Egg Harbor → Fish Creek
Day 2: Peninsula State Park → Ephraim → Sister Bay
Day 3: Ellison Bay → Gills Rock → Washington Island
Day 4: Baileys Harbor → Cave Point → Jacksonport → Sturgeon Bay

Could you drive the entire peninsula faster?

Of course.

But that’s not really the point.

Door County is better when you leave room for the unplanned stops.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Door County?

Summer is the busiest season, especially from June through August, when outdoor activities, beaches, boating and restaurants are in full swing.

But if you ask me, September and early October would be hard to beat.

You get crisp weather, fall color and fewer peak-summer crowds. And, if you like fish, many places offer the famous Fish Boils.

A fall Door County road trip with colorful trees, lake views, little waterfront towns and a sweatshirt?

Yes please.

Just remember that some attractions, ferry services, restaurants and businesses have reduced hours outside peak season, so check schedules before you go.

A Few Door County Road Trip Tips

Don’t over-plan this trip.

Seriously.

Choose the places you definitely want to see, but leave some empty spaces in your schedule.

Pack a cooler and some easy snacks. If you need ideas, I’ve already put together a list of my Favorite Road Trip Snacks.

Book lodging early if you’re traveling during summer or fall weekends.

And don’t assume every great stop will have a giant billboard pointing you toward it. Some of the best parts of Door County are the little roads, overlooks, farm markets and shops you notice while driving.

Ready to Plan Your Door County Road Trip?

Door County Is a Road Trip Worth Taking Slowly

Door County isn’t about checking 27 attractions off a list before dinner.

It’s about driving with the windows down, wandering through little towns, eating something involving cherries, stopping because the lake looks pretty and wondering why you haven’t spent more time exploring Wisconsin.

That’s exactly what makes it such a great Midwest road trip and one of our favorites.

Start in Sturgeon Bay, work your way north, take the ferry if you have time and come back along the Lake Michigan side.

Just don’t be surprised when you start planning your next Door County trip before you’ve even finished the first one.

Because Door County has a sneaky way of doing that.
