Portugal has far more to offer than the obvious benefits of mild temperatures and gorgeous beaches. As one of the oldest countries in Europe, it is a veritable treasure trove for history lovers. If you’re the sort of person who enjoys finding something new at every twist and turn, and gettingbelow the surface when it comes to your holiday destinations, then Portugal is a perfect choice for you.
Three unmissable activities for history lovers in Portugal
Portugal was initially inhabited by the Lusitanians, then the Romans, then Germanic tribes, then the Islamic Umayyad Caliphate and finally the Christians before officially becoming the country of Portugal at the end of the 9th Century. This rich mix of cultures means that you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to historical buildings and artefacts to enjoy.
However, there are some places that really should make it onto the bucket list of any history lover. We look at the top three activities that you’ll want to get involved in when you visit this gorgeous country.
Visit Sintra
Famous for its fairytale aesthetic, and the colorful towers of the Pena Palace, the cultural landscape of Sintra offers everything you could wish for. From whimsical villas through to a 10th century Moorish castle, there is something for everyone and plenty to keep you entertained for far longer than just a day.
If you only have one day, it’s best to be prepared and wear your most comfortable shoes, as there is plenty of walking to do. In order to get a glimpse of the major spots, you should carefully plan a one-day itinerary and get there early in order to beat the crowds that flood off the tourist buses.
If you’re looking for some insider knowledge and prefer to hear your information rather than having your head stuck in a guidebook, there are plenty of walking tours. Some of these you can pick up once you arrive in Sintra, or you can book yourself onto a group that leaves from Lisbon centre if you’re staying in the city.
Stay at Óbidos Castle
If you’re looking for a truly unique experience to impress any history lover, or simply as a treat to yourself, how does staying overnight in a medieval castle sound? Óbidos Castle was gifted to Queen Santa Isabel by King Dinis, as a wedding present during their wedding ceremony.
The castle and surrounding village have plenty of charm, with medieval architecture and breathtaking views. You can either stay in the castle itself, which boasts 17 rooms as well as a restaurant and bar. Or you can stay in the Casa de Castelo, if you want to be closer to town. For those who really want an immersive experience, then book a visit during the Mercado Medieval, a festival where the townspeople dress up in period costume. It usually takes place in July and August.
Make a trip to Tomar
If you’re into history, then it’s likely that you’ve heard of the Knights Templar. The most wealthy Christian military orders. Founded in 1119 and existing for almost two centuries, the order expanded far beyond just fighting units. They are shrouded in mystery. Primarily because of the legends and stories that have intertwined fact with fiction in modern pop culture.
What we know for sure is that at least some members had a base in Tomar. As a result it is rich in architecture and history. One of the greatest sights is the Convent of Christ. This was built during the Portuguese Renaissance. However, the chapel was built earlier, in the 12th century. Today, it is a UNESCO world heritage site. Open to the public to explore and learn about its Templar founders.
Once you’ve visited the church, head down into town. The religious symbolism continues here. The oldest area is laid out in the shape of a cross, with a convent at each point. The streets are home to several local cafés. You can pick up a sweet treat to take with you on your adventures. Treats such as cheese cakes and Tomar slices, which are made with egg yolks. Finish off your day wandering around the many museums to truly appreciate the history of this amazing town.
