Fall is a great time to get outside and enjoy the cooler air after a long hot summer. There are many fun things to do outside in the fall before the long cold hard winter comes knocking. I know to well how long the winter is, living here in Minnesota.
Finding time and activities that get you out and about in the fall can be a bit of a challenge. The days are already shorter but there are still some super cool things to do before winter strikes.

10 Fun Things to do Outside in the Fall
Here is a great list of 10 fun things to do outside in the fall. I hope you find this list helpful to get some inspiration before many of us are snowed in or stuck inside due to the cold. I’d love to hear where you live and what you do in the fall.
Hiking Outside in the Fall
Fall hikes are so much fun. The colors can be so beautiful, the weather a bit cooler so you don’t get overheated and sometimes even less people on the hiking trails as many families are sticking close to home due to kids in school.
There are always many parks or trails for hiking in every town or nearby so make a list and hit them all. Bonus, it’s great exercise for the everyone involved. Maybe pack a picnic to enjoy while on your hike.
My favorite hike is checking out all the waterfalls in my area. There are many and I love them all.
Apple and Pumpkin Fun
Take advantage of the fall fruits, like apples and pumpkins. Head to an orchard or a pumpkin patch and pick your own for your baking needs, or just snacking fun. Plan an apple picking and apple baking day. Apple pie anyone?
A pumpkin patch can be a lot of fun too and most towns have them or corn mazes set up for families to enjoy.
Fall Camping
Fall is my husbands favorite time to go camping. He likes the cooler temps for a few reasons. One can enjoy bug free camping, and enjoy a nice hot fire in the evenings and even during the day.
While swimming is usually not something one can do while camping in the fall, a nice trip around a lake in a canoe is always relaxing.
Biking Outside in the Fall
Riding bicycle if fun in the spring and summer, but more so in the fall as you can view all the beautiful colors on your bike ride. A nice long ride is perfect in cooler temps. Maybe ride to the apple orchard and bring home some fresh apples.
Football Season
For those football lovers, fall is their season. Maybe it’s your kids who play football, or you just love pro football. Either way, fall is the time of the year to enjoy any games that might be outdoor.
Being in Minnesota we are lucky as our pro stadium is an indoor one, but I know for many their stadium is outdoor. So, enjoy it in the fall while you can.
Raking Leaves Outside in the Fall
Not that this is the most fun fall activity to do, it usually is one that many have to do. Make it fun so it’s not so much like a job. Rake leaves use them to make yard ornaments for fall, like these cute Halloween outdoor decorations.
Raking leaves is also great exercise and will get your body grooving before you turn into a bear to hibernate for winter.
Fall Festivals
Festivals are so much fun. Maybe a fall vendor event with crafts and homemade foods, or a fun beer festival and a hay ride. Outdoor events are a great fall activity and a fun way to say goodbye to fall and have one last blast of fun.
Haunted Houses
With Halloween being in the fall, you must do a haunted house or two. Many places will do a haunted corn maze or hay ride. Here we have a bit of everything, a hay ride to a haunted house and then also a place with the haunted corn maze.
Scary, fun, and can give you an adrenaline rush to speed up your metabolism before the long winter. Ok, maybe not but it’s worth a try!
Visit a Zoo Outside in the Fall
Sometimes in the summer just walking thru a zoo can be exhausting. The heat and then most of the animals will hide in their inside enclosures if they are to hot so you might not see all the fun animals.
Many zoo’s will do fun fall things for kids and so it’s a perfect time to take the whole family. Even places like Corn Cob Acres can be a fun family outing.
Motorcycle Riding
I realize not everyone has a motorcycle, but those who do can fully understand why I say get your riding in now before winter comes. Fall can have some pretty nice days, to get all dressed in your leather and hit the open road.
A few places around my area we rode to recently were the Silver Creek Cliff Tunnel and Enger Tower in Duluth, Mn. Both were a great ride, on a beautiful fall day. I am a fair weather rider so can’t ride if it’s to chilly. Yes, I am a princess.
Enjoy Your Fall Outdoor Activities
No matter what you choose to do with your outdoor time for the fall, I am sure you will have a blast. Fall isn’t very long here in Minnesota so we try to seize every opportunity to get out and do fun things before winter hits.
