10 Best Things to do in Yellowstone
1. Visit Old Faithful
It’s no surprise that Old Faithful tops the list because it’s the most famous feature in Yellowstone National Park. Named in 1870, this cone geyser erupts about every 30 minutes, although it’s not on a time clock and eruptions times are not guaranteed. Give yourself plenty of time and try to get to Old Faithful about 30 minutes in advance of the next eruption.
2. Check Out Upper Geyser Basin
This geyser basin is often overlooked because of its star attraction, you guessed it, Old Faithful. However, this is the largest concentration of geysers not just in the park, but in the entire world. Make sure to see the morning glory pool.
Tip: Visit Upper Geyser Basin before or after you watch Old Faithful erupt.
3. See Wildlife In Lamar Valley
Lamar Valley is the wildlife capital of Yellowstone and is known as ‘America’s Serengeti.’ You will see herds of bison, packs of grey wolves, grizzly bears, moose, and so much more. This is one of the most remote corners of the park but well worth the drive if you truly want to experience the wild side of Yellowstone.
Tip: Head to Lamar Valley at dusk or dawn to see even more wildlife.
4. Hit The Trails
There are 900 miles of trails in the park and hitting the trails is one of the best things to do at Yellowstone. There are some great trails to check out including, Bunsen Peak, Fairy Falls, Mystic Falls Trail, and Uncle Tom’s Trail. Don’t leave your dog behind. There are trails in Yellowstone that are dog friendly.
5. Drive Grand Loop Road
Grand Loop Road is the major artery through Yellowstone making it the perfect way to see most of the best attractions that the park has to offer. The road is about 142 miles and takes anywhere from 4 to 8 hours to drive. However, if you try to drive the loop in one day you will miss many of the amazing attractions. It’s best to spread the drive out over 2 or 3 days.
6. Take In The Grand Canyon Of The Yellowstone River
Arguably one of the most impressive sights to behold at Yellowstone is the beauty of the Grand Canyon Of Yellowstone. There are a variety of overlooks to see different angles of the canyon, pay attention because the canyon walls turn a bright yellow in the right light (Yellow-stone).
7. Marvel At The Upper And Lower Falls Of The Yellowstone River
The most impressive waterfall in the park, the falls of the Yellowstone River, is one that you can’t miss. Head to Artist Point for an iconic view of the lower falls and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
8. Check Out Mammoth Hot Springs
One of the park’s most unique things to do is check out Mammoth Hot Springs. Walk the boardwalks of this stunning geothermal feature. Or take a drive around Mammoth’s travertine terrace where the formations are often described as natural sculptures.
Tip: Mammoth Hot Springs is where the elk hang out, especially during the fall season.
9. Fly Fish In Yellowstone Lake
Try to hook a Yellowstone cutthroat, brown trout, or rainbow trout in Yellowstone Lake, or you could try your luck in the Yellowstone or Madison Rivers. If fishing isn’t your thing, relax and take in the views of the stunning Yellowstone Lake. This is the park’s largest body of water and the largest high elevation lake (above 7,000 ft) in North America.
10. Relax In The Boiling River
The Boiling River is a unique and hidden gem inside Yellowstone. A place where a natural hot spring meets a river and the mixing of the hot and cold water makes the perfect natural hot tub. What a perfect way to relax after a day of exploring.
